National Sanatorium Kikuchi Keifuen

This sanatorium was established as the sanatorium for the union of Kyushu(9 provinces)Nanaken(7prefectures) "Kyushu Sanatorium" in 1909.
In 1941, it transferred to operate under National and changed the name to National Sanatorium Kikuchi Keifuen and it celebrated 100anniversary in 2009.
Until recently, we have accommodated Hansen's disease patients and helped them, which we have plowed through the various histories. However we only give the service of mainly medical treatment and welfare for the people in the sanatorium and administer as the place in order to support their life of community. Most of all people here now have cured Hansen's disease and partially people have physically handicap as sequela or they have been here to have medical treatment because of their old age. Most of them are having normal life but some are needed to special care at the lame word. Lately many people understand Hansen's disease and we enjoy the sanatorium events like Bon festival, culture festival, gate ball (like croquet) tournament, and Karaoke contest with the community.
The former director of the sanatorium made efforts for the development activities to repeal leprosy prevention law and endeavor to get the human rights back or human restoration through contributing newspaper or speech.
In 1996, the leprosy prevention law was repealed and no more quarantine existed. However, it's hard to say that the prejudice and discrimination were completely dissolved and exists the fact that the relationship among the family is complicated and difficult to be reintroduced to the society.
We are continuing to take care of the people under the promise to watch for the last man. We aim that not only Keifuen but also community together will rejoin the society. We made the social exchange hall or history museum in the sanatorium.
We hope people learn the history related Hansen's disease through the exhibit material and understand what Hansen's disease is correctly and think coexist without any prejudice.
